Oil-blast circuit breakers are among the first types of circuit breakers used. Using oil, they create an insulating hydrogen bubble around the existing arc. This gas insulation prevents the arc from re-striking once the current reaches zero. Vacuum breakers interrupt the circuit in a vacuum chamber.
